What we cover
A first visit is an in-depth look at how feeding is really going. We watch a feed, weigh your baby, check for jaundice and hydration, review diapers and sleep, and answer the questions that pile up in the first weeks.
Because our visits run longer than a typical appointment, there is usually time to handle the early newborn medical items in the same sitting instead of sending you to several offices. That can include the Arizona newborn screening (the one in the pink envelope your hospital sends home at discharge) when it is due, a newborn hearing screen, and a bilirubin check for jaundice, alongside the weight and growth review. If something needs attention, like slow gain, a painful latch, or a supply concern, we evaluate and start a plan right there and coordinate with your pediatrician.
We check on you, too, not only the baby. That includes a postpartum wellbeing check with a validated mood and anxiety screen and a blood-pressure check, because the early weeks carry real medical risks for moms that are easy to miss once OB visits taper off.
What to bring and expect

Questions parents ask us
How soon after birth should we come?
Newborns should be seen within one to two days of leaving the hospital. Call us before you are discharged or as soon as you are home, and we will help you get scheduled, often the same week, so those first days are covered.
Can you do the newborn screening and hearing test here?
When they are due, yes. We can complete the Arizona newborn screening (the one in the pink envelope your hospital sends home at discharge) and a newborn hearing screen, along with a jaundice check, so you are not making separate trips for each one.
Do you replace our pediatrician?
No. We mostly focus on feeding and breastfeeding medicine, and we coordinate with your pediatrician for routine newborn care. We also provide transitional care for newborns and families who have not yet selected a pediatrician, can’t get in to see one, or are visiting and will not be establishing care with a local pediatrician.
Can you see us if we are combo feeding?
Absolutely. We support breastfeeding, combination feeding, and pumping, around your goals.
Is the visit covered by insurance?
Often, yes. We’re in-network with most major commercial plans, AHCCCS, and TRICARE. Because we often see families quickly, sometimes the same day or the next morning, and we offer Saturday visits, we can’t always confirm benefits before your visit, and we never let that delay care. These are medical visits, so your plan may apply a copay, coinsurance, or deductible. We’ll help you understand your coverage, and final benefit details are ultimately between you and your plan.
