Nipple Pain & Trauma · Tucson
Breastfeeding shouldn’t be painful. Let’s find out why.
Sore, cracked, or burning nipples almost always have a fixable cause. We evaluate both you and your baby, find what is actually driving the pain, and give you relief and a plan.

What we look for
Nipple pain has many causes, and the fix depends on the right diagnosis. We assess latch and positioning, your baby’s oral function and suck, vasospasm and Raynaud’s, thrush or bacterial overgrowth, skin and dermatologic causes, and pump-flange fit and suction settings.
We treat mom and baby together, because the cause often sits between the two of you, and a quick latch fix or a flange change can be the difference between dreading a feed and being comfortable.
How we help
- A feeding observation and a structured look at latch and oral function
- Treatment for skin damage, vasospasm, thrush, or bacterial causes when present
- Pump assessment, including flange sizing and settings
- A comfort and healing plan so you can keep feeding while things recover
- Follow-through until the pain is actually resolved, not just managed
Questions parents ask us
Is it normal for breastfeeding to hurt?
Brief tenderness early on can be common, but ongoing pain is a signal worth evaluating. It usually has a cause we can identify and treat.
Could it be a tongue-tie?
Sometimes oral function is part of the picture. We assess it carefully and only recommend a release when it is truly warranted. See our tongue-tie approach.
Can you help with pumping pain?
Yes. Flange fit and pump settings are common, fixable causes of pain that get missed.
Is the visit covered by insurance?
Often, yes. We’re in-network with most major commercial plans, AHCCCS, and TRICARE. Because we often see families quickly, sometimes the same day or the next morning, and we offer Saturday visits, we can’t always confirm benefits before your visit, and we never let that delay care. These are medical visits, so your plan may apply a copay, coinsurance, or deductible. We’ll help you understand your coverage, and final benefit details are ultimately between you and your plan.
